Less than five miles away from Prairie Village is the town of Fairway, home to the Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site. This national historic landmark is located on a 13-acre stretch of property and features three historic buildings, period rooms and exhibits. The mission served as an early territorial capital as well as a supply point for those traversing the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. Union soldiers also camped here during the Civil War. Exhibits include 19th-century timber frame cabin replicas, manual labor tools (used by children), teachers' living quarters, classrooms and dormitories. Basket making workshops are also offered for children of all ages.
The Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club, located within the community of Prairie Village, is a lush, well-maintained course. Its various sized greens are predominantly flat and its fairways wide and lined with trees.
